CHAPAKHOWA: With a history spanning more than a century, Sadiya Government Higher Secondary School in Assam’s Tinsukia district has been highlighted for an ₹8 crore investment aimed at strengthening educational infrastructure at the historic institution.

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu shared details of the school and its proposed development investment in a recent social media post under the Sewa Sankalp Abhiyan.

Established in 1905 at Purona Sadiya as a Government Middle English School, the institution has witnessed significant changes over the decades. Natural disasters and riverbank erosion forced it to shift locations several times before it eventually settled in Chapakhowa.

The school achieved high school status in 1946 and was upgraded to the Higher Secondary level in 1975. Its historical significance is also linked to Nilakanta Hazarika, father of renowned Assamese cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, who served as a teacher at the institution. Maulvi Abdul Latif Barua was among its early headmasters.

Today, the school occupies 57 bighas of land and provides education to 1,222 students from Classes VI to XII. Its team comprises 49 teaching and non-teaching staff, with Principal Usharani Hazarika leading the institution.

The proposed ₹8 crore investment underscores the importance of improving educational infrastructure in established institutions, particularly those serving communities in remote areas of Assam. The initiative also brings renewed attention to the school’s longstanding contribution to education in the region.

Further details regarding the specific development works and implementation schedule were not included in the minister’s announcement.
