Goalpara, Assam: In a fresh crackdown on the illegal drug trade, Goalpara Police apprehended two individuals from Nidanpur under Lakhipur Police Station and seized 4.34 grams of suspected heroin and 1.1 kilograms of ganja from their possession.

The operation was led by the Officer-in-Charge of Lakhipur Police Station and carried out late Saturday night. Police confirmed that legal action has been initiated against the accused.

This latest seizure comes amid Assam Police’s ongoing statewide campaign against narcotics, launched under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s directive to make the state drug-free. Over the past few years, the Assam Police have destroyed thousands of kilograms of contraband substances and arrested hundreds involved in the trade.

Goalpara, being a transit point in Lower Assam, has witnessed several such operations. Police officials say drug traffickers often use smaller towns like Lakhipur as routes to smuggle narcotics into larger markets.

Goalpara Police, in a statement on social media, reaffirmed their commitment to continue strong action against drug peddlers and urged citizens to cooperate by sharing information about suspicious activities.

“Drugs are destroying young lives. Our mission is to protect the youth of Assam from this menace,” a senior police officer said.

Authorities have also appealed to residents to remain vigilant. Community participation, police say, is key to breaking the supply chain of narcotics. Local awareness drives and tip-offs from citizens have already helped law enforcement agencies in multiple successful operations.

The arrested individuals are being interrogated, and further investigations are underway to trace the wider network involved in the supply of narcotics in the region.
