Rhino Poaching Bid Foiled in Assam; Three Arrested, Rifle and Ammunition Seized

Biswanath, Assam: In a coordinated joint operation, Biswanath Police, along with Majuli Police and Lakhimpur Police, successfully foiled a rhino poaching attempt and arrested three accused individuals.

The arrested persons have been identified as Muhikanta Pegu of Dhenudhara village, Ward No.1 under Gohpur Police Station, Biswanath; Manuj Pathari (38) of No.1 Mishamora village under Garamur Police Station, Majuli; and Kiran Pegu (41) of Ukhal Chuk under the same police station.

Acting on information provided by the accused, the police recovered one .303 rifle and nine 70 mm 12-bore cartridges from the house of Debajit Pegu of New Dandi, under Gohpur Police Station, Biswanath. Debajit Pegu is currently absconding, and efforts are on to nab him.

A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway under the supervision of the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Biswanath.

Authorities said the swift action of the joint police team helped prevent a potential rhino poaching incident, reinforcing ongoing efforts to protect Assam’s rich wildlife heritage.
