Guwahati, Thursday — In a successful operation based on intelligence inputs, Guwahati Police intercepted a vehicle and foiled a gold smuggling attempt at the Jorabat Naka Check Point, officials confirmed today.
According to a statement posted by Guwahati Police on X, a team from Basistha Police Station (EGPD) stopped a vehicle bearing registration number AS01-EV-8157 during routine checking. Upon inspection, officers recovered seven gold biscuits weighing a total of 690.94 grams.
Police said the seized vehicle has been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.
The suspected smuggler has been identified as Md. Saleh Murajhar, a resident of Murajhar in Hojai district. He was apprehended on the spot and is now facing legal proceedings.
Authorities suspect the smuggling attempt may be linked to a larger network operating in the region, given Assam’s increasing role as a transit route for illegal gold movement.
The Guwahati Police stated that stringent action will continue against illegal trade and smuggling activities in the city.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
