Assam Education Minister and senior leader Ranoj Pegu on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of the Singijan Fish Seed Farm at Dhemaji, marking a significant boost to the state’s fisheries and aquaculture sector. The project is being implemented by the Department of Fisheries, Government of Assam, with funding support under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF-XXIX) for the year 2022–23.

The fish seed farm is being developed at a total cost of ₹1.02 crore and aims to strengthen local aquaculture by ensuring the availability of quality fish seed for farmers in Dhemaji and surrounding areas. The facility is expected to reduce farmers’ dependence on fish seed sourced from outside the district, thereby lowering input costs and improving productivity.

Sharing the development on X, Ranoj Pegu stated that the project would play a crucial role in improving the livelihoods of fish farmers while promoting sustainable fisheries development in the region. He emphasized that access to high-quality fish seed is a key factor in enhancing fish production and income generation in rural areas.

Officials of the Fisheries Department said the Singijan Fish Seed Farm would support scientific breeding practices, help maintain genetic quality of fish stock, and contribute to the long-term growth of the fisheries sector. The initiative aligns with the state government’s broader objective of strengthening rural infrastructure and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through sector-specific development.

Once completed, the facility is expected to serve as an important hub for aquaculture development in Dhemaji, benefiting local farmers and contributing to Assam’s goal of becoming self-reliant in fish production.
