Dhemaji, March 14: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Saturday distributed new ration cards to 1,017 families at the District Commissioner’s office in Dhemaji under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), enabling thousands of beneficiaries to access free foodgrains.

The distribution programme was organised at the office of the District Commissioner of Dhemaji and aimed at extending the benefits of the central welfare scheme to eligible families across multiple constituencies in the district.

According to official details shared by the minister, the newly issued ration cards will benefit 11,729 members belonging to the 1,017 households.

Beneficiaries Across Three Constituencies

The beneficiaries were drawn from three constituencies of the district:

  • 352 families from the Dhemaji Assembly Constituency
  • 463 families from the Sissiborgaon Assembly Constituency
  • 202 families from the Jonai Assembly Constituency

With the issuance of these ration cards, the families will now receive free foodgrains under the PMGKAY scheme, ensuring food security for economically weaker households in the region.

Focus on Food Security

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, launched by the Government of India, aims to provide free foodgrains to eligible beneficiaries through the public distribution system. The scheme has played a crucial role in supporting low-income families and ensuring food security, particularly in rural and remote areas.

Officials said the new ration cards will allow beneficiaries to access subsidised or free food grains through fair price shops under the Public Distribution System.

Government Commitment to Welfare Schemes

Sharing details of the programme on social media platform X, Minister Ranoj Pegu reiterated the commitment of the BJP-led Assam government to ensure that welfare benefits reach all eligible citizens.

He stated that the state government remains dedicated to ensuring that no eligible beneficiary is excluded from either central or state welfare schemes. According to him, the ration card distribution programme reflects the government’s continued efforts to expand social welfare coverage in the state.

Local officials and beneficiaries attended the programme, where the minister handed over the ration cards and interacted with residents.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the food security network in Dhemaji district and provide much-needed support to hundreds of families who will now receive free foodgrains regularly under the scheme.
