Sonapur PS raided

Guwahati, March 22: In a significant crackdown on illegal liquor operations, the Guwahati Police carried out a successful raid in the Sonapur area, destroying a large quantity of illicit alcohol and initiating legal proceedings against those involved.

According to an official update shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Guwahati Police, a team from the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD), operating under Sonapur Police Station, conducted a targeted operation at Rupnagar in Sonapur. During the raid, the police team seized and destroyed approximately 500 litres of locally brewed illicit liquor, commonly known as hooch, along with 10 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL).

The operation was part of an ongoing effort by the police to curb the production, distribution, and consumption of illegal alcohol in and around Guwahati. Illicit liquor poses serious health risks and has been linked to multiple incidents of poisoning and fatalities in various parts of the country. Authorities have been intensifying surveillance and enforcement measures to eliminate such unlawful activities.

Officials confirmed that the seized hooch was destroyed on-site to prevent any possibility of redistribution. The IMFL recovered during the raid was also confiscated as part of the enforcement action. Police sources stated that legal action has been initiated against individuals involved in the illegal trade, although further details regarding arrests or suspects have not yet been disclosed.

A senior police official noted that such operations will continue in the coming days, particularly in areas identified as hotspots for illegal brewing and sale of liquor. The public has also been urged to report any suspicious activities related to illicit alcohol to help authorities maintain law and order.

The successful raid highlights the continued vigilance of Guwahati Police in tackling illegal activities and ensuring public safety across the region.
