Guwahati, June 11: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Wednesday convened a special meeting to review monsoon preparedness and discuss key civic issues, including flood management, public health and urban infrastructure.

The meeting, chaired by Mayor Mrigen Sarania, was attended by nearly all ward councillors. Discussions focused on addressing seasonal challenges through coordinated planning and timely intervention ahead of the monsoon.

A major point of discussion was the implementation of scientific flood mitigation measures to tackle waterlogging and flooding in vulnerable areas of the city. Councillors and officials examined various strategies aimed at improving drainage management and reducing disruptions caused by heavy rainfall.

Public health concerns also figured prominently during the meeting. Participants reviewed issues related to pollution-related ailments and communicable diseases such as tuberculosis. The councillors stressed the need for awareness campaigns, preventive healthcare measures and effective monitoring to protect residents during the rainy season.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, GMC Mayor-in-Council member Ratna Singh described the deliberations as productive and said the civic body would work towards implementing the suggestions discussed during the session.

The GMC is expected to strengthen its preparedness efforts in the coming weeks, with a focus on flood control, sanitation and public health initiatives to ensure the well-being of residents during the monsoon season.
