Guwahati, June 28: In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Guwahati Police seized 198 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup and arrested six persons during a raid conducted at Digaru on the outskirts of Guwahati. The operation was carried out by a team of the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) from Sonapur Police Station based on specific intelligence inputs.
According to Guwahati Police, the Codeine syrup bottles were concealed inside a travelling bag in an apparent attempt to evade detection. Acting swiftly on the intelligence received, the police intercepted the suspects, recovered the contraband and took all six accused into custody.
The arrested persons have been identified as Saddam Hussein (31), Dildar Ali (29), Aizul Hussain (28), Anuwar Hussain (38), Moinul Islam (35) and Wahidul Ali (18), all residents of Nagaon district.
Following the seizure, the accused were taken into custody and the recovered Codeine syrup was seized as evidence. Guwahati Police said legal proceedings have been initiated against all six accused under the relevant provisions of law.
In a post shared on X, Guwahati Police stated that the operation was conducted by the EGPD team from Sonapur Police Station on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, resulting in the successful recovery of the contraband and the arrest of the six suspects.
The latest seizure is part of the Assam Police’s ongoing drive against the illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Police have intensified intelligence-led operations across the state to curb the transportation and distribution of prohibited substances and dismantle organised drug trafficking networks.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the seized Codeine syrup, identify its intended destination and determine whether any other individuals were involved in the alleged trafficking network.
