Guwahati, Assam: In a major breakthrough against organised crime, the Guwahati Police have dismantled a city-based theft syndicate by arresting 31 habitual offenders during a special operation carried out by the Crime and Guwahati Police District (CGPD) team of Panbazar Police Station.

According to Guwahati Police, the operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the activities of an organised gang involved in systematic thefts across the city. Acting swiftly on the information, police conducted a coordinated raid that resulted in the apprehension of all 31 accused along with the recovery of a substantial quantity of stolen property.

Investigations revealed that the gang was allegedly involved in the theft of mobile phones, wallets, electric wires, copper cables, water meters, ceiling fans and several other valuable items from different parts of Guwahati. The stolen goods were reportedly disposed of through illegal scrap dealers operating in and around the city.

Police officials stated that the crackdown was aimed at breaking the network responsible for repeated theft incidents that had caused concern among residents and businesses. The recovery of stolen articles is expected to help investigators identify additional theft cases linked to the syndicate.

Guwahati Police have initiated legal proceedings against all those arrested. Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the network, trace the channels used for disposing of stolen property, and take action against those involved in the illegal scrap trade connected with the racket.

The police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help curb organised crime in the city.
