Guwahati: Assam has emerged as one of the best-performing states in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), with more than 22 lakh rural families receiving permanent houses under the flagship housing scheme over the past decade.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday highlighted the state’s achievements through a post on X, stating that Assam has made remarkable progress towards the goal of “Housing for All” under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the Chief Minister, the state has received financial assistance of Rs 27,730 crore under PMAY-G during the last ten years. He also said Assam currently ranks second in the country in terms of the release of funds under the rural housing scheme, reflecting its consistent performance in implementing the programme.

The Chief Minister said the initiative has transformed the lives of lakhs of economically weaker families by providing them with permanent homes, replacing temporary and dilapidated structures with safe and secure housing.

PMAY-G is a flagship Central Government scheme aimed at providing pucca houses with basic amenities to eligible rural households. Besides improving housing conditions, the programme is intended to enhance the overall quality of life and support inclusive rural development.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the scheme, Sarma said efforts are continuing to ensure that every eligible family in Assam receives the benefits of the programme and that no deserving beneficiary is left without a permanent home.

The state government has consistently identified PMAY-G as one of its key rural development initiatives, with housing construction and fund utilisation witnessing steady progress over the years.
