Makum, July 7: The Makum unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has submitted a memorandum to the co-district commissioner, alleging irregularities in the repair and maintenance of portions of National Highway 37 passing through the town.

In the memorandum, the student organisation stated that despite submitting several representations in the past, the condition of the highway has shown little improvement. It alleged that several stretches of the road remain badly damaged, with large potholes creating safety risks for motorists and other commuters.

The AASU unit also criticised the quality of the repair work carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD), claiming that damaged portions of the highway were only temporarily filled with sand and gravel instead of being properly restored.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of the road, the student body urged the district administration and the concerned department to undertake comprehensive repair and maintenance work at the earliest. It said timely restoration of the highway is essential to ensure smooth traffic movement and safeguard commuters from accidents.

The memorandum calls for immediate intervention by the authorities, stressing that durable and quality repairs are necessary to prevent further deterioration of the highway and to improve road safety in the Makum area.
