GUWAHATI: Strengthening academic cooperation between Northeast India and Bhutan was at the heart of the Indo-Bhutan Two-Day Symposium 2026, which commenced at Gauhati University with researchers, faculty members and students taking part in discussions on pressing regional issues.

The opening day brought climate change, food security and holistic well-being into focus, creating a platform for participants to exchange research findings and perspectives on challenges affecting communities across the region.

The programme featured the inauguration of the Prof. H.K. Baruah Memorial Lecture, the Prof. N.K. Das Memorial Research Innovation Award and the Indo-Bhutan Symposium. Faculty members and academics from Gauhati University and the Royal University of Bhutan also delivered talks as part of the day’s programme.

Technical sessions held alongside the main programme allowed researchers and scholars to present their work and engage in detailed academic discussions. Participants from Northeast India and Bhutan used the forum to explore ideas and perspectives on subjects of shared importance.

The symposium also highlighted the value of cross-border academic engagement in addressing issues such as environmental change, food security and community well-being. Such interactions provide researchers and students with opportunities to build academic connections and explore potential areas of collaboration.

Prof. Kumananda Tayung, Professor and Head of the Department of Botany at Gauhati University, is the Convener of the symposium.

The two-day gathering at Gauhati University brings together academic voices from the region and Bhutan, with the programme continuing its exchange of research and ideas during the second day.
