GUWAHATI, October 15: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has urged residents, devotees and Durga Puja organisers to adopt eco-friendly practices and ensure proper waste management during the festive season.

In an appeal issued through its official social media account, the civic body called on people to use designated dustbins, avoid single-use plastics, dispose of Puja waste responsibly and refrain from littering public areas.

The corporation stressed that maintaining cleanliness during religious celebrations requires the collective participation of citizens and Puja committees. It encouraged organisers to keep their pandals and surrounding areas clean while ensuring that waste is disposed of appropriately.

The appeal comes amid GMC’s broader efforts to promote a cleaner and more environmentally conscious Durga Puja in Guwahati. Under its Swachh Durga Puja 2026 initiative, the corporation has also encouraged Puja committees to maintain clean surroundings, provide dustbins and reduce plastic use. The cleanliness competition is scheduled to run from October 16 to 21, according to local news reports.

Proper waste management is particularly important during major festivals, when large gatherings can generate significant amounts of discarded packaging, food waste and decorative materials. Separating wet and dry waste and using designated collection points can help improve sanitation and simplify waste collection.

GMC’s appeal also reflects its wider responsibility for solid waste collection and sanitation across Guwahati.

The corporation urged the public to celebrate with devotion and responsibility, reminding citizens that keeping Guwahati clean and green is a shared responsibility.
