A new air-conditioned electric bus service connecting Biswanath Chariali and Tezpur was formally inaugurated on Monday, marking a step towards modern and eco-friendly public transport in the region. The service has been introduced by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) to offer commuters a more comfortable, efficient, and sustainable travel option.
The electric bus service was flagged off by ASTC Chairman Pallab Lochan Das at a special programme held at the Automated Testing Station (ATS) premises in Biswanath Chariali, in the presence of several dignitaries. Addressing the gathering, Das said the initiative was launched in response to the increasing demand for reliable and improved transport facilities in the district.
He noted that the introduction of air-conditioned electric buses would not only enhance daily commuting but also help reduce air pollution. Emphasising the environmental benefits, he said the move reflects ASTC’s commitment to cleaner and greener public transport, with electric buses playing a key role in lowering carbon emissions.
The inaugural programme was conducted by ASTC Managing Director Chinmay Prakash Phukan, who outlined the objectives of the new service. Biswanath Chariali Municipal Board Chairperson Amarjyoti Borthakur, ASTC Vice-Chairman Pranabjyoti Lahkar, and Biswanath District Commissioner Lakshinandan Chaharia also addressed the event, highlighting the significance of strengthening transport connectivity between the two towns.
They said the new service would be particularly beneficial for office-goers, students, and daily commuters who frequently travel between Biswanath Chariali and Tezpur. Local residents welcomed the initiative and expressed hope that more such modern and environmentally friendly transport services would be introduced in the district in the future.
