Guwahati: Assam is witnessing a significant boost in its education infrastructure as the state government undertakes large-scale construction of new school buildings across various districts. A total of 487 school buildings are currently under construction with a cumulative investment of ₹3,269.86 crore, marking one of the most extensive infrastructure initiatives in the education sector in recent years.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu shared the update on social media platform X, highlighting that the initiative is being carried out under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. According to the minister, the projects are being funded through major central and state-backed schemes, including the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), and the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for the North East Region (PM-DevINE).
On Friday, Minister Pegu reviewed the progress of the ongoing construction works during a detailed meeting with officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Education Department. The review focused on monitoring project timelines, ensuring adherence to quality standards, and resolving any implementation challenges at the field level.
Out of the 487 school buildings currently under construction, 58 have already been completed. These newly built institutions are scheduled to be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 2, 2026. Officials indicated that the completed buildings are equipped with improved classroom spaces and essential infrastructure aimed at enhancing the overall learning environment.
The state government views this initiative as a critical component of its broader strategy to strengthen public education in Assam. By upgrading physical infrastructure, the government aims to improve access to quality education, create safer and more conducive learning spaces, and support better academic outcomes for students across both urban and rural areas.
Authorities have emphasized that strict monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure timely completion of the remaining projects. With a large portion of the construction work progressing steadily, the government expects the initiative to have a lasting impact on Assam’s education system, benefiting students, teachers, and local communities alike.
