The Assam Legislative Assembly has passed the Azim Premji University Act, 2025, paving the way for the establishment of a not-for-profit university in the state. The announcement was shared by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu through a post on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the minister, the upcoming Azim Premji University in Assam will function under a philanthropic and charitable endowment model, ensuring affordability while maintaining high academic standards. The institution is expected to focus on quality teaching, research, and teacher education, aligning with the vision of the Azim Premji Foundation.

In a significant provision, the Act mandates that 10% of total seats will be reserved exclusively for students from Assam, offering greater access to higher education for local youth.

Calling it a major milestone, Pegu stated that the initiative marks a progressive step toward strengthening the higher education ecosystem in the state and broadening learning opportunities for students.

The establishment of the university is expected to contribute to academic excellence, capacity building, and enhanced research culture in Assam, offering students access to globally recognized education frameworks rooted in social commitment and equity.
