Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma departed for Davos, Switzerland, to participate in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026, scheduled to be held from January 19 to January 23. The five-day global summit will bring together political leaders, business heads, policymakers, and experts from across the world to deliberate on key economic and geopolitical issues.

With this visit, Sarma will make history as the first representative from Assam to attend the prestigious WEF annual meeting. He will represent the state before global industry leaders and international financial institutions, highlighting Assam’s economic potential and development priorities.

Ahead of his departure, the Chief Minister shared a message on social media platform X, stating that he would soon board a flight to Zurich to represent Assam at Davos 2026. He expressed optimism about engaging in productive discussions and forging agreements that could accelerate Assam’s growth trajectory in the coming days.

Earlier, Sarma had described Assam’s participation as a significant opportunity, noting that only a limited number of Indian states have so far been part of the WEF platform. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan are among the states that have previously taken part. He emphasized that, for the first time, the Government of India has permitted Assam to participate in the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting.

The Chief Minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending this opportunity, calling it a major boost for the state. He said that Assam would be represented alongside global leaders and economists during his four-day official visit, marking an important milestone in the state’s economic outreach.

During the Davos visit, Sarma is expected to hold meetings with global industry leaders, policymakers, and senior corporate executives. The discussions will focus on showcasing Assam’s strengths, attracting foreign investment, and exploring partnerships across key sectors. He is also scheduled to participate in panel discussions and bilateral meetings, where he will present Assam’s development roadmap and long-term vision.

The World Economic Forum’s annual meeting is regarded as one of the most influential global platforms for dialogue between governments, businesses, civil society, and academia. Assam’s participation is expected to help build investor confidence, enhance international visibility, and strengthen the state’s position on the global economic map.
