Guwahati, July 24, 2025: In a strong show of support for Assam’s rich handloom legacy, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed his government’s commitment to revitalizing the state’s traditional weaving industry. Sharing an update via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, CM Sarma highlighted key initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting handloom artistry across the state.

“We are committed to supporting Assam’s timeless handloom heritage. With 94 Training Centres & 240 Demonstration Circles, we are inculcating this skill to the younger generation and making #HandloomCoolAgain,” the Chief Minister posted.

The accompanying image in his post captures the essence of this revival initiative. It shows CM Sarma observing a woman working on a traditional loom, symbolizing the government’s hands-on approach in empowering local artisans and promoting indigenous craftsmanship.

As part of the state’s efforts, 94 Handloom Training Centres and 240 Demonstration Circles have been established, serving as hubs for skill development and practical exposure. These centers aim to attract the youth towards handloom weaving—a practice deeply rooted in Assam’s cultural identity, from the golden Muga silk to the soft Eri yarn.

The initiative, branded under the slogan “Making Handloom Cool Again”, is not just about preservation. It also seeks to modernize perceptions, boost employment opportunities, and increase market outreach for local weavers.

From showcasing the brilliance of hand-spun Muga to the sustainable warmth of Eri silk, Assam’s handloom story is one of resilience, tradition, and unmatched artistry. With this renewed focus, the state government envisions a new era where handloom is not just a heritage industry but a contemporary choice for fashion and livelihood.
