Assam Government Targets Up to 2.5 Lakh Jobs, Announces Expansion of Youth Schemes

Guwahati, April 4: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika on Friday announced that the state government aims to generate between 2 lakh and 2.5 lakh government jobs if it returns to power. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, the minister outlined key welfare initiatives and development plans undertaken by the current administration.

Hazarika highlighted the success of the Mukhyamantri Atmanirbhar Scheme, stating that nearly one lakh youths have already received financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each. He added that the government now plans to significantly scale up the initiative by covering 10 lakh youths and increasing the financial support to ₹5 lakh.

Focusing on education, the minister said over 57 lakh students have been provided free textbooks across the state. Additionally, around 10 lakh girl students have received bicycles to support their education. Financial aid has also been extended to nearly 4 lakh girl students under the Nijut Moina Scheme, while the Nijut Babu Scheme has also been launched to further strengthen support systems.

On healthcare infrastructure, Hazarika stated that 16 medical colleges have been established in Assam. He noted that medical seats have increased from 726 earlier to 1,850, with plans to expand this number to 2,800 in the coming years.

Highlighting investment and industrial growth, the minister said Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹5.5 lakh crore were signed during Advantage Assam 2.0, out of which projects worth ₹2 lakh crore have already begun implementation. He also revealed that 15 five-star hotels are expected to be developed in Guwahati, boosting the hospitality sector.

In terms of employment generation, Hazarika stated that approximately 29,000 local youths are expected to gain jobs through the upcoming Jagiroad Semiconductor Project. He emphasized that the government remains committed to accelerating industrialisation and expanding job opportunities across Assam.
