The Department of School Education, Government of Assam, in association with Samagra Shiksha Assam (SSA), on Friday distributed financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the families of 46 deceased contractual teachers and employees. The cheque distribution programme was held at the SSA Conference Hall in Kahilipara, Guwahati.
Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu attended the event as the chief guest and personally handed over the cheques to the next of kin of the deceased staff members. Senior officials of Samagra Shiksha Assam were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Pegu said the assistance reflects the state government’s continued commitment to supporting the families of contractual educators and employees who contributed to the development of Assam’s school education system. He acknowledged the role played by these individuals in strengthening educational services across the state.
The beneficiaries included families of contractual personnel who served in various roles under SSA, including Assistant Teachers, Grade-IV staff, Resource Persons for Inclusive Education, Junior Engineers, and LDA-cum-Accountants. The affected families belong to several districts, such as Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Chirang, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Sribhumi, Tinsukia and Udalguri.
Sharing details on social media, Dr Pegu stated that since 2018–19, the Assam government has provided financial assistance amounting to ₹18.4 crore to the families of 374 deceased SSA teachers and employees, including the beneficiaries covered in the current programme.
Officials said the initiative underscores the government’s policy of extending institutional support to the families of contractual staff who served the education sector with dedication.
