Mizoram Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Sunday held discussions with Assam Tourism Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass in Guwahati, with both sides expressing consensus on jointly promoting tourism and moving toward a formal cooperation agreement at the earliest suitable time.
During the meeting, Hmar noted a steady rise in tourist arrivals to Mizoram, pointing out that a significant share of visitors currently comes from Assam. Emphasising the need for closer coordination with the neighbouring state, he said enhanced engagement with Assam would help unlock further growth in the tourism sector.
Responding positively, Dass welcomed the proposal and immediately discussed the matter with departmental officials. Highlighting the historical ties between the two states, he said Mizoram shares a close bond with Assam and remains an attractive destination for people from the state. He added that improved rail connectivity is expected to further increase tourist movement from Assam to Mizoram.
Hmar said that despite being a small state with a limited population, Mizoram is making concerted efforts to emerge as a preferred tourism destination. He stressed that partnerships with neighbouring states would be more effective than distant collaborations in advancing regional tourism. He also requested that promotional images and video visuals of Mizoram be displayed during major tourism events organised by Assam.
Assuring support, Dass said the request would be accommodated. Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) Managing Director Kumar Padmapani Bora, who was also present at the meeting, suggested organising workshops in Guwahati for Mizoram-based tour operators. He further stated that ATDC is willing to extend institutional support to Mizoram for tourism promotion initiatives through collaborative efforts.
