Guwahati: Assam Police have intensified their crackdown on drug trafficking with the seizure of 148.40 grams of heroin during an intelligence-led anti-narcotics operation at Rajghat in Dholai area of Cachar district. One individual has been arrested in connection with the seizure, officials confirmed on Friday.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma shared details of the operation on social media platform X, commending the Cachar Police for the successful action. The Chief Minister stated that the operation was conducted based on specific intelligence inputs as part of the state’s sustained drive against narcotics networks.
“Busting the drugs network. In an intel-backed anti-narcotics operation carried out by Cachar Police at Rajghat, Dholai, 148.40 grams of heroin were seized. One individual has been arrested. Our relentless drive against drugs continues,” Sarma wrote, praising the efforts of Assam Police.
According to police officials, the seized contraband has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway to identify the source of the heroin and trace possible links to a wider drug trafficking network operating in the region. Authorities are also examining whether the arrested individual has connections with inter-district or inter-state drug syndicates.
The latest seizure comes amid an intensified campaign by the Assam government to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse across the state, particularly in districts considered vulnerable due to their geographical location and transit routes. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to maintain strict surveillance and conduct regular intelligence-based operations to disrupt supply chains.
In a related development, Assam Police on Thursday carried out another major anti-narcotics operation in Karbi Anglong district, leading to the seizure of heroin estimated to be worth around ₹2 crore. Two persons were arrested in that operation. The contraband was reportedly concealed in 30 boxes inside a vehicle that the Chief Minister described as a “travelling soap factory”, although no soap was found during the search.
Sharing details of the Karbi Anglong seizure on X, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the innovative concealment methods used by traffickers while reaffirming the government’s zero-tolerance approach. He congratulated the Karbi Anglong Police for successfully intercepting the consignment and apprehending the suspects.
The recent seizures underline Assam’s ongoing and aggressive stance against the drug menace. In December last year, Assam Police had conducted coordinated anti-drug operations across multiple districts, including Cachar and Karbi Anglong, resulting in the seizure of narcotics worth approximately ₹11 crore and the arrest of several suspected peddlers.
Senior officials stated that such operations will continue across the state, with a focus on intelligence sharing, coordinated enforcement, and dismantling organised drug trafficking networks. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and protecting youth from the harmful impact of narcotics through sustained enforcement and awareness measures.
