Guwahati, March 27: Assam has achieved a major breakthrough in animal husbandry with the successful birth of its first calf through advanced In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Embryo Transfer Technology.

Reacting to the development, Assam Cabinet Minister for PWD (PMGSY), Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, and Fishery, Krishnendu Paul, termed it a “proud and historic achievement” for the state. In a post on X, he said the milestone marks a new era in Assam’s livestock and dairy sector.

The healthy female calf, named Lakhimi, was born on March 26, 2026, at a dairy farm in Sonapur in Kamrup district. Belonging to the Gir breed, the calf weighed around 23 kilograms at birth and was reported to be active and healthy.

The achievement was made possible by the efforts of Dr. Manjyoti Bhuyan and her team at the College of Veterinary Science, Assam Veterinary & Fishery University, with support from co-researchers Dr. Manna Baruti and Dr. Raju Deka.

Scientists said the success demonstrates that Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) can be effectively implemented under field conditions in Assam. The technology is expected to help improve genetic quality, enhance milk productivity, and boost farmers’ income.

The minister also credited the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma for strengthening the veterinary and livestock sector in the state.

Experts believe this milestone will encourage wider adoption of modern breeding techniques and significantly contribute to making Assam’s dairy sector more productive and sustainable.
