Morigaon, Assam – In a significant step for wildlife conservation, Assam released 104 turtle hatchlings of three species – Black Softshell Turtle, Indian Tent Turtle, and Ganges Softshell Turtle – at Haduk Beel in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary on 27 September 2025.

The hatchlings were collected from Hayagriva Madhab Temple in Hajo and nurtured at the Assam State Zoo before their release. This initiative, aimed particularly at aiding the recovery of the critically endangered Black Softshell Turtle, was jointly led by the Assam State Zoo and the temple committee.

Haduk Beel, known for its secure and suitable habitat, provides an ideal environment for the turtles to thrive, marking a notable milestone in Assam’s wildlife conservation efforts.
