In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with multiple civil and security agencies, has destroyed a large-scale illegal ganja cultivation in Tripura. The operation was carried out in the general areas of Kamalnagar and Bijoynagar, located about 48 kilometres south of Agartala, the state capital.

According to an official post shared by the Assam Rifles on X (formerly Twitter), the joint operation involved personnel from the Sepahijala District Police, the Forest Department, the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Tripura State Rifles. Acting on specific inputs, the teams conducted a thorough search of vulnerable cultivation zones in the area.

During the crackdown, security forces detected and destroyed approximately 1.80 lakh ganja saplings spread across several patches of land. The illicit crop is estimated to have a market value of around ₹27 crore, dealing a significant blow to narcotics networks operating in the region.

In an official statement, the Assam Rifles said the operation reflects its sustained efforts to counter drug trafficking and dismantle illegal cultivation in the Northeast. The force emphasised that close coordination with civil administration and other security agencies remains central to its anti-drug strategy.

“This joint operation highlights our unwavering commitment, in close coordination with civil and security agencies, to curb drug trafficking and eliminate illicit cultivation, contributing towards a drug-free and secure Tripura,” the statement said.

Security officials further noted that Tripura’s terrain and proximity to international borders make certain areas vulnerable to illegal plantation and narcotics supply chains. To address this, similar coordinated operations will continue in identified hotspots to prevent the growth, movement, and distribution of illicit drugs.

The successful operation once again underlines the Assam Rifles’ role as a key force in maintaining internal security and combating organised crime in the region, reinforcing the broader goal of ensuring a drug-free and secure Tripura.
