Guwahati, November 3: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced a series of major railway development initiatives following a “productive meeting” with Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi.

In a post shared on X, the Chief Minister said the meeting focused on expanding the railway’s footprint in Assam to enhance overall connectivity and benefit people across the state.

Among the key decisions finalized were the introduction of three new Amrit Bharat trains to and from Assam, aimed at providing improved travel options for passengers and boosting regional connectivity.

Sarma also shared that a new railway link will be established between Umrangso, the scenic hill town in Dima Hasao district, and Lanka in Hojai district. This project is expected to strengthen inter-district connectivity and open new avenues for tourism and trade in the region.

Another major development discussed was the expedited construction of the Kokrajhar–Gelephu Mindfulness City railway line, which will connect Assam with Bhutan, furthering cross-border connectivity and economic cooperation.

Additionally, the Chief Minister said efforts will be made to ensure more stoppages in Assam for major trains passing through the state, improving accessibility for passengers across various regions.

Expressing satisfaction over the meeting, CM Sarma said that Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has “kindly consented” to all the proposed action items.

The new initiatives, once implemented, are expected to mark a significant step forward in Assam’s transportation infrastructure, contributing to economic growth, tourism, and ease of travel for the people of the state.
