The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) observed Good Governance Day across Assam on Wednesday at booth, mandal, district and state levels to mark the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a Bharat Ratna awardee. December 25 is commemorated nationwide in remembrance of Vajpayee’s ideals of inclusive and people-centric governance.

Party programmes began on December 24 at the BJP Assam Pradesh headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Hengrabari, Guwahati, where the BJP Mahila Morcha lit 1,000 earthen lamps. The event was inaugurated by BJP Assam president and Darrang–Udalguri Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia.

On December 25, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma offered floral tributes to Vajpayee’s portrait at the party headquarters. Cabinet Minister Ranoj Pegu and senior party leaders were also present. An exhibition showcasing photographs and key milestones from Vajpayee’s life and contributions to the nation was organised on the occasion.

Addressing party workers, Saikia described Vajpayee as a visionary statesman who laid the foundation of modern India through transformative initiatives in infrastructure, defence, economic reforms and national security. He recalled landmark decisions such as the Pokhran nuclear tests, expansion of national highways and the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. Saikia also highlighted Vajpayee’s role in establishing the Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), which brought focused national attention to the North-East, and said his vision is being carried forward under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accelerating development in Assam and the region.

Earlier, Chief Minister Sarma took to X on the occasion of Atal Smriti Varsh, recalling Vajpayee as a guiding force and great statesman. He said he visited the BJP state headquarters in Guwahati, attended the walkthrough exhibition on Vajpayee’s life and times, and paid his tributes. Sarma concluded his message with “Sadaiv Atal,” reaffirming the enduring relevance of Vajpayee’s ideals.

The BJP reiterated that Vajpayee’s principles of Antyodaya and good governance continue to guide the party’s vision and policies from the grassroots to the state level.
