Raigad, July 26, 2025: A major accident occurred on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Khopoli in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Saturday, involving around 20 vehicles and injuring at least 19 people.
According to officials, the accident took place on the Mumbai-bound lane of the expressway, under the jurisdiction of Khopoli Police Station. The mishap happened between the new tunnel and the Food Mall hotel stretch, a notorious slope on the route.
Preliminary reports suggest that a container truck suffered a brake failure while descending the slope, leading to a catastrophic pile-up. The out-of-control truck rammed into several vehicles, including high-end cars like BMW and Mercedes, and multiple heavy vehicles.
“The truck’s driver lost control after the brakes failed. It hit at least 20 vehicles, seriously injuring 19 people. They have been admitted to a private hospital in Navi Mumbai,” said a police official.
Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far. Emergency services, including police, fire personnel, and ambulances, reached the site swiftly and began rescue operations.
The driver of the container truck has been taken into custody. A medical test confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.
A case has been registered, and a detailed investigation is underway to assess mechanical failure and verify responsibility. Authorities are also working to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow on the expressway.
