The Cachar district administration has issued a directive making it mandatory for all hotels, restaurants, and eateries to carry out monthly testing of drinking water.

Under the new guideline, every establishment serving water to customers must have their samples checked for physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters in accordance with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms. Testing must be conducted through the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) or other recognized laboratories.

Test reports are to be submitted by the 10th of each month to the relevant authorities, including the District Health Officer, Silchar Municipal Corporation, or the licensing body that oversees the establishment.

The Cachar PHED will support businesses by ensuring timely testing services and maintaining a centralized repository of all results.

Officials highlighted that the initiative aims to prevent contamination risks and maintain transparency regarding compliance among commercial establishments.

Failure to adhere to the directive may result in legal action under the Public Health Act, the Food Safety and Standards Act, and other relevant regulations.
