Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday inaugurated the Cachar unit of Star Cement at Bihara, terming the project a major milestone in the state’s journey towards accelerated industrialisation and balanced regional development. The new unit is expected to generate significant employment opportunities for local youth and act as a catalyst for economic growth in the Barak Valley.

Sharing the development on X, the Chief Minister described the project as symbolic of a transforming Assam. “The face of a new Assam where industrialisation is laying the foundation of prosperity and growth. Today, I inaugurated Star Cement’s Cachar unit which will create new job opportunities for youth of Barak Valley and boost growth of the region,” Sarma said.

Highlighting the importance of the investment, Sarma said the facility reflects the government’s sustained focus on strengthening the industrial base of the state, particularly in regions that have traditionally remained outside the main industrial corridors. He added that the Cachar unit would play a crucial role in driving inclusive growth by creating direct and indirect employment while supporting allied sectors.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the state-of-the-art greenfield cement plant has an annual production capacity of 2 million tonnes and is powered by advanced German technology, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and high-quality output. The project is among the largest industrial investments in the Barak Valley in recent years.

A key feature of the plant is that it is the first private cement unit in the Barak Valley to have its own railway siding. This facility is expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce transportation costs, and streamline supply logistics, making the unit more competitive while strengthening the region’s industrial ecosystem.

The Chief Minister noted that such large-scale industrial projects not only boost manufacturing capacity but also create a ripple effect across the local economy by improving infrastructure, encouraging skill development, and attracting further investment to the region.

In a separate update, Sarma also highlighted the rapid transformation of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. He said the airport has evolved “from an open space to a world-class gateway in just a few years,” reflecting the government’s vision for a more connected and confident Assam.

The upgraded airport, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to open its doors to the world from February 22, marking another major milestone in Assam’s infrastructure push. Sarma said the development underlines the state government’s commitment to strengthening connectivity and positioning Assam as a key gateway to the Northeast and beyond.
