New Delhi, July 28, 2025 — In a significant step toward strengthening Assam’s higher education landscape, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday invited Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to lay the foundation stone of Kanaklata Barua University in Gohpur, Assam.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma wrote:

“Today in New Delhi, I had the honour to invite Hon’ble Union Minister Smt @nsitharaman Ji to visit Assam and lay the foundation stone of the upcoming Kanaklata Barua University in Gohpur.”

The university, named after Birangana Kanaklata Barua, one of Assam’s most revered freedom fighters, will be among the first institutions in the region to adopt an entirely industry-oriented academic approach, the Chief Minister announced.

He further added that once operational, the university will offer specialised programs in cutting-edge fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, Robotics, and other emerging technologies, making it a hub for futuristic learning and innovation in the Northeast.

The project reflects the Assam government’s commitment to empowering youth with future-ready skills, while also paying tribute to the state’s rich legacy of sacrifice and patriotism through institutions named after national heroes.

The university is expected to attract both academic and industrial partnerships, further strengthening Assam’s position on the national educational map. The visit of Union Finance Minister Sitharaman to lay the foundation stone is likely to take place in the coming weeks.
