Silchar, Oct 25 — Marking a major stride in healthcare development for southern Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday laid the foundation stone for a ₹295-crore, 208-bed Super Speciality Hospital at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). The project, aimed at strengthening specialised healthcare in the Barak Valley, is expected to serve a large section of the population across the region.
Sharing the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister wrote, “Furthering quality healthcare in Barak Valley. To ensure specialised treatment is available to the people of Barak Valley within the region, I laid the foundation stone of the ₹295cr Super speciality hospital at SMCH which will cater to a large section of people.”
Earlier in the day, while addressing the media at the Police Parade Ground in Silchar, Sarma described the new facility as a milestone project in the state’s ongoing effort to expand advanced medical infrastructure. “This will be a milestone project to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Barak Valley,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare services across Assam.
In addition to the hospital project, the Chief Minister also unveiled a series of other major infrastructure initiatives for the region. These include:
The construction of an elevated corridor from Trunk Road near Capital Point to Rangirkhari (Phase I).
A new bridge over the Barak River at Moduraghat to ease regional connectivity.
Providing a key update on the Dolu Airport project, Sarma said the proposal has already received clearance from the airport authorities. “It will now move to the Standing Finance Committee and then to the Cabinet. I believe all necessary processes will be completed by the end of this year,” he added.
Highlighting the significance of these initiatives, the Chief Minister said the projects reflect the government’s broader vision for balanced regional growth. “Barak Valley will witness a transformation in connectivity and healthcare — two critical pillars of development,” Sarma stated.
Reiterating his government’s focus on progress and welfare, Sarma expressed confidence that the people would continue to support the BJP’s developmental agenda in the upcoming 2026 elections.
With the foundation of the super speciality hospital now laid, the Barak Valley stands on the brink of a new era in medical advancement — one that promises better healthcare, improved connectivity, and stronger regional growth.
