Dharamshala, July 5, 2025: His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and a global icon of peace and compassion, marked his 90th birthday today with a touching message shared on the X platform (formerly Twitter). In his birthday note, the Dalai Lama emphasized the need for compassion, peace of mind, and altruism over material development, echoing the essence of his lifelong teachings.
“On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I understand that well-wishers and friends in many places, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations,” he wrote. “I particularly appreciate the fact that many of you are using the occasion to engage in initiatives that highlight the importance of compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism.”
Despite modestly describing himself as “just a simple Buddhist monk”, the Dalai Lama’s message continues to inspire millions. He noted that while he does not typically celebrate his birthday, he is moved by the global observances organized in his honor.
A Message Rooted in Wisdom and Service
In his message, the Dalai Lama reflected on the importance of inner peace, stating that while material progress is valuable, true happiness comes from cultivating a compassionate heart—not just for family and friends but for all living beings.
“Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place,” he said, encouraging people to adopt a mindset of inclusivity and empathy.

“As long as space endures,

Until then, may I too remain
