Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Wednesday took a major step towards strengthening urban sanitation by launching a new fleet of modern sanitation machinery aimed at improving waste management and cleanliness across the city. The ceremonial flag-off was held near the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) Building.

The newly inducted sanitation equipment was flagged off by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah in the presence of Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Deputy Mayor Smita Roy, Members-in-Charge (MICs), councillors, and senior GMC officials. GMC Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phukoon, Additional Commissioner Dr Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika, and other officials were also present at the event.

According to GMC officials, the new fleet includes four mechanical sweeping machines, 50 auto tippers, seven suction machines, and 14 dump tanks. These machines are expected to significantly enhance mechanised street cleaning, solid waste collection, and drainage maintenance in different parts of the city.

Announcing the launch, GMC stated that the addition of modern sanitation machinery would improve operational efficiency and reinforce the corporation’s commitment to building a cleaner and healthier Guwahati. The new equipment is designed to support faster waste removal, better handling of solid waste, and more effective cleaning of roads and drains, especially during the monsoon season when drainage maintenance becomes critical.

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the initiative reflected the state government’s focus on upgrading urban infrastructure and sanitation services. He emphasised that modern technology and mechanisation play a key role in maintaining cleanliness in a rapidly growing city like Guwahati.

Mayor Mrigen Sarania noted that the new fleet would strengthen GMC’s sanitation workforce and improve service delivery at the ward level. Deputy Mayor Smita Roy added that better equipment would also help ensure safer and more efficient working conditions for sanitation workers.

GMC officials said the initiative aligns with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission and the corporation’s long-term plan to modernise urban sanitation systems. With the induction of these machines, GMC aims to ensure cleaner streets, improved waste management, and a healthier living environment for residents of Guwahati.
