Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg was laid to rest today at Kamarkuchi, near Guwahati, with full state honors. Thousands of fans gathered at Sarusajai Stadium over the past two days to pay their respects. The funeral procession carried the singer’s body to the cremation site, accompanied by a 21-gun salute from the Assam Police.
Among the mourners, Garg’s wife stood prominently by his side, sharing the grief with family and close associates. His younger sister, Palmee Borthakur, also performed the last rites, supported by close friends Arun Garg and Rahul Gautam Sharma.
In a moving moment, Garg’s four pet dogs—Diya, Rambo, Maya, and Iko—were brought to the stadium to bid their final farewell, touching the hearts of those present.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had announced the allocation of 10 bighas of land in Kamarkuchi for the burial, shared an emotional tribute on social media: “The final goodbye to the legend, #BelovedZubeen. You will always be alive in our hearts and thoughts.” He had earlier confirmed that the Assam Cabinet approved the burial site following discussions with Garg’s family.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and representatives from various cultural organizations.
Garg’s passing has left a void in Assam’s cultural landscape, but his legacy lives on through his music and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of his fans, with his wife standing as a steadfast presence in preserving his memory.
