Guwahati, March 14: Guwahati Police arrested an alleged drug peddler in the city and recovered suspected heroin during an operation carried out at Basistha Chariali.
According to officials, a team from the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) under Basistha Police Station launched the operation based on specific intelligence inputs regarding drug trafficking activities in the area.
During the operation, police apprehended the accused, identified as Bapon Haloi alias Raju (29), a resident of Nalbari district in Assam.
Police said the suspect was intercepted at Basistha Chariali, one of the busy entry points of the city. Upon searching him, the police team recovered one soap box containing suspected heroin weighing approximately 11.9 grams.
Following the seizure, the accused was taken into custody and the contraband was seized as evidence.
In a post on social media platform X, Guwahati Police stated that the arrest was made after acting on reliable intelligence inputs. The police added that legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Officials said the operation is part of the ongoing crackdown against drug trafficking networks operating in and around Guwahati. The city police have intensified surveillance and intelligence-based operations in recent months to curb the illegal trade of narcotics.
Police sources indicated that further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused is linked to a larger drug distribution network operating in the region.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to continue strict action against drug peddlers and urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing information related to drug trafficking activities.
