Guwahati Police have busted an impersonation and cheating racket with the arrest of three accused persons, following a swift operation by a team of the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) from Hatigaon Police Station. The arrests were made in connection with a reported case in which victims were duped by individuals posing as Income Tax officers.

According to police, the breakthrough came with the arrest of Abdullah Hussain (23), a resident of Bhagadattapur. Based on information obtained during interrogation, the police team conducted further operations that led to the arrest of two more accused — Saddam Hussain of Jhagrapar in Dhubri district and Moyan Ali of Gossaigaon.

During the operation, police recovered and seized ₹36,300 in cash and one car bearing registration number AS01PC1382, which was allegedly used during the commission of the crime.

Investigations revealed that the accused persons impersonated Income Tax officials and targeted two youths staying at Hotel Seven Heaven. The victims were allegedly forcibly taken from the hotel to Nath Jewellery located at Sewali Path in Hatigaon. There, the accused compelled them to purchase a gold necklace worth ₹64,000.

Police further stated that the victims were also forced to hand over ₹30,000 in cash, while an additional amount of ₹30,000 was transferred online under coercion. The total financial loss to the victims amounted to over ₹1.24 lakh.

Guwahati Police confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain whether the accused were involved in similar crimes elsewhere and to identify any additional accomplices. Legal action has been initiated against all three accused under relevant sections of law.

The police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious individuals claiming to be government officials, especially in cases involving threats, coercion, or demands for money.
