Guwahati, August 9 — Acting on specific intelligence, the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha Police Station intercepted a Hyundai i20 (registration number DL4C AX 0800) near the Audi showroom at Beharbari on Friday. The operation led to the recovery of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) worth ₹18,000.

The arrested accused have been identified as Wasim Wangmayum (21) of Lilong, Thoubal district, Manipur, and Samurailatpam Prasanta Sharma (25) of Mantrikhong, Imphal, Manipur.

According to police, a total of 36 counterfeit ₹500 notes were seized, along with the Hyundai i20, a Poco Android phone belonging to Wasim, and an iPhone 15 Pro belonging to Prasanta.

Preliminary investigations suggest the duo procured the fake currency from Noida and Delhi, intending to circulate it in Guwahati. Police suspect the accused to be part of a larger interstate network engaged in fake currency distribution.

Authorities have initiated a detailed investigation to trace the source of the counterfeit notes and identify other members of the racket.
