Guwahati: In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Guwahati Police have busted an illegal NDPS network operating in the city, leading to the arrest of three persons and the seizure of a large quantity of banned substances, including codeine phosphate cough syrup, ganja and heroin.
According to Guwahati Police, the operation was carried out on February 14 following specific intelligence inputs. A team from the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD) under Fatasil Ambari Police Station conducted a raid at a residence located on Prabhat Boro Path in Dhirenpara.
During the raid, police apprehended Rohimuddin Laskar (38) for allegedly selling NDPS substances illegally. From his possession, the police recovered and seized:
- 258 bottles of codeine phosphate cough syrup (PRIKOF-T and Broncof-C), each of 100 ml, weighing approximately 31.218 kg, containing about 51.6 grams of codeine phosphate
- Ganja weighing 4.190 kg
- Heroin weighing 9.59 grams, stored in eight vials
- Cash amounting to ₹3,095
- One Realme mobile handset
- One manual weighing scale
Following Laskar’s arrest, further interrogation and investigation led police to identify the supply chain behind the contraband. Acting on the information obtained, the police arrested Rantu Ali, identified as the supplier, from the Jalukbari area.
The probe was further widened based on the confessions of the arrested persons, which revealed the source of the banned codeine phosphate cough syrup. Police subsequently traced the supply to Akula Pharma in Adabari and arrested Manik Singha, the owner of the establishment.
During follow-up searches, the police also recovered 860 additional bottles of the banned codeine phosphate cough syrup, indicating the scale of the illegal operation.
Guwahati Police confirmed that legal action has been initiated against all the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to identify other links in the network.
Officials said the operation underscores Guwahati Police’s continued efforts to curb drug trafficking and dismantle organized narcotics supply chains in the city.
