Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated his government’s commitment to youth empowerment, announcing an ambitious target to create 10 lakh entrepreneurs in the coming term. The statement comes shortly after he highlighted the success of the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhiyan (CMAAA), under which 2 lakh youth have already been empowered as entrepreneurs since 2021.
In a recent post on X, Sarma recalled the BJP government’s 2021 promise to make Assam’s youth self-reliant. He emphasized that the initiative has yielded significant results, positioning entrepreneurship as a key driver of economic growth in the state. “The next goal is clear—10 lakh youth to be empowered as entrepreneurs,” he stated, signaling a major scale-up of the program.
Strong Push Ahead of Assam Elections
The announcement aligns with the BJP’s broader campaign narrative ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. During the Jan Ashirwad Yatra in Bajali district, Sarma addressed a large gathering in the Bhawanipur–Sarbhog constituency, projecting confidence in a strong electoral mandate.
He underscored the government’s employment track record, stating that around 1.5 lakh jobs have already been provided. Looking ahead, he promised 2 lakh additional jobs if the BJP returns to power. Sarma also contrasted the current recruitment system with previous regimes, alleging that government jobs once required financial influence, while his administration has ensured transparent, merit-based hiring.
Financial Support for Women and Welfare Expansion
In a significant outreach to women voters, the Chief Minister announced an increase in financial assistance under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan. Beneficiaries currently receiving ₹10,000 will see the amount rise to ₹25,000 in the next term.
He further assured that all eligible beneficiaries would be covered under the Orunodoi scheme, one of the state’s flagship welfare programs aimed at providing financial support to economically weaker families.
Infrastructure and Land Reforms
Sarma also highlighted ongoing infrastructure and land reform initiatives. He promised the construction of a flyover in Bhawanipur to improve connectivity in the region. Additionally, he stated that around 1.5 lakh bighas of Satra land have been cleared of encroachment, with plans to free another 500 bighas in the near future.
Political Context
The BJP has fielded Ranjeet Kumar Dass from the Bhawanipur–Sarbhog seat, setting up a competitive electoral contest. Sarma expressed confidence that the party would secure a “historic victory”, citing strong grassroots support.
Strategic Focus: Entrepreneurship as Growth Engine
The push to expand entrepreneurship from 2 lakh to 10 lakh beneficiaries reflects a strategic pivot toward self-employment and decentralized economic development. Analysts note that this approach not only addresses unemployment but also stimulates local economies, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
With elections approaching, the BJP’s campaign in Assam appears to be centered on a mix of employment generation, welfare expansion, and infrastructure development, with entrepreneurship emerging as a flagship theme.
The coming months will determine whether these promises translate into electoral gains, but the scale of the target signals a high-stakes vision for Assam’s economic future.
