Sonapur, Assam | July 13, 2025: In a historic moment for India’s fisheries sector, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the inauguration of the country’s first-ever Aqua Tech Park in Sonapur, near Guwahati. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister shared:
“India’s first Aqua Tech Park inaugurated in Sonapur, Assam 🌊🐟
Dedicated the Aqua Tech Park, a first of its kind in India which will greatly boost fish production and provide ample earning opportunities to the youth in Assam.
This park will be a model of fisheries development.”
The Aqua Tech Park, conceptualized as a modern hub for aquaculture technology and fishery-related research, is expected to play a transformative role in boosting fish production across Assam and the northeastern region. Equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure, the park is designed to support scientific breeding, hatchery innovation, feed development, and advanced water management practices in aquaculture.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, CM Sarma emphasized the state’s vision to make Assam a self-reliant and leading player in fish production. He stated that the Aqua Tech Park will not only meet local demand but also create large-scale employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, especially for the youth.
“This is a proud day for Assam. With the Aqua Tech Park, we are creating a sustainable model that will empower our local fish farmers with the latest tools and techniques, thereby enhancing productivity and income,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that the park will serve as a centre for training, skill development, and innovation, offering opportunities for students, researchers, and start-ups interested in aquaculture.
With Assam traditionally being one of the top fish-consuming states in the country, this new initiative is expected to drastically reduce dependency on imports and strengthen the state’s economy through local production and export potential.
Experts believe that this pioneering project may become a national benchmark for similar parks in other states, ushering in a new era of blue economy development in India.
The inauguration of the Aqua Tech Park marks yet another significant step by the Assam government under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership to boost agriculture and allied sectors through modern technology and sustainable models.
The park is now open for institutional collaboration and is likely to host national-level seminars and training programs in the coming months.
