Lawyers’ Association Protests Office Relocation, Holds Hunger Strike in Guwahati

The Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati (LAG) on Tuesday staged a day-long hunger strike opposing the state government’s plan to relocate its riverside office building as part of a riverfront beautification project.

Members of the association observed the protest from 9 am to 4 pm outside the office, reiterating that the proposed relocation would disrupt judicial functioning. The LAG has consistently opposed the shifting of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court to a temporary location, warning that any further relocation would adversely affect access to justice.

The association recalled that a similar hunger strike was organised on December 27 as part of its ongoing agitation. Continuing its protest, the LAG has also decided to boycott the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Gauhati High Court at Rongmahal scheduled for January 11.

LAG leaders said the protest would continue until the government withdraws the relocation proposal and addresses concerns related to judicial infrastructure.
