A special POCSO court in Nagaon sentenced 36-year-old Santanu Saikia to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old girl in 2021. The court, presided over by Additional District and Sessions Judge cum Special Judge POCSO Court Chitra Rani Saikia, also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on the accused.
The incident occurred in Phulaguri under the Raha police station’s jurisdiction, where the accused took advantage of the absence of the victim’s parents to commit the crime inside her home. According to the victim’s mother’s complaint, Santanu Saikia threatened the girl with severe consequences to prevent her from disclosing the incident.
Following a thorough investigation, Sub-inspector Samar Jyoti Deka of Raha Police Station filed a chargesheet against theon accused under case no. 265/2021, citing Section 4(2) of the POCSO Act. The court, after reviewing evidence and hearing from lawyers and witnesses, found the accused guilty. Three witnesses testified during the trial.
Special Judge Saikia, in addition to the 20-year imprisonment, ordered the Rs. 10,000 fine to be paid to the victim to support her rehabilitation.
