Brasília, July 8, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi held significant bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Brazil, further reinforcing India’s diplomatic engagement with Latin American nations. PM Modi met with President Yamandú Orsi of Uruguay and President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora of Bolivia, emphasizing enhanced cooperation and stronger ties under the broader vision of the Global South.

Meeting with President of Uruguay: Focus on Trade, Defence & Yoga Diplomacy
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi shared details of his interaction with Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi. He expressed optimism about deepening the strategic partnership between India and Uruguay, stressing that “close ties between our nations are important for the Global South.”

The leaders discussed boosting bilateral cooperation in key sectors including trade, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, technology, and defence. PM Modi also highlighted the growing appeal of Yoga in Uruguay, calling it a powerful medium to strengthen people-to-people connections. The interaction marks a significant step in India’s outreach to South America, particularly in the context of rising global interest in wellness, sustainable development, and South-South collaboration.

Meeting with President of Bolivia: Trade Diversification and Technological Partnership

In another high-level engagement, PM Modi met with Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora. The Prime Minister called the meeting “fruitful” and noted that Bolivia is a valued partner in Latin America with whom India’s bilateral relations have grown stronger in recent years.

Both leaders focused on enhancing and diversifying trade linkages on a priority basis. Discussions also included collaboration in critical sectors such as digital technology, critical minerals, healthcare, and space. Prime Minister Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Bolivia on its 200th anniversary of independence, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s journey.
