Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, on Saturday denounced the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh, calling it a shocking act of brutality and a serious breach of human rights.
In a statement, Saikia said the killing underscores the continuing vulnerability of Hindu minorities and other at-risk groups in the neighbouring country. He described the incident as an affront to human dignity and said such violence undermines the spirit of good neighbourly relations.
Seeking immediate intervention, the Opposition leader urged the Government of India to act decisively on the diplomatic front. He said the Ministry of External Affairs should engage Dhaka at the highest level to ensure a prompt probe, justice for the victim, and concrete steps to prevent recurrence.
Saikia also called for raising the issue at global platforms, including the United Nations, to mobilise international pressure against targeted attacks on minorities. Citing India’s expanding global influence, he said New Delhi must translate its diplomatic clout into real security guarantees for communities living in fear.
Further, he suggested that India engage key world leaders and major trading partners of Bangladesh to apply calibrated economic and diplomatic pressure, arguing that such engagement could push authorities there to act firmly against violence targeting minorities.
Appealing directly to Narendra Modi, Saikia asked the Prime Minister to treat the matter as an urgent humanitarian concern and offer reassurance to the Hindu community. He also urged Modi to address the issue during his proposed visit to Assam, reaffirming India’s commitment to safeguarding minority rights in the region.
