Volvo has achieved a major milestone with the XC60, which has now sold over 2.7 million units globally, officially overtaking the legendary Volvo 240 as the best-selling Volvo model of all time.

Introduced in 2008, the mid-size SUV quickly became a favourite among drivers seeking a perfect balance of safety, comfort, and Scandinavian design. Its enduring popularity across various global markets is a testament to its wide appeal. In fact, the XC60 was crowned World Car of the Year in 2018, further cementing its place in the premium SUV segment.

Reflecting on the achievement, Sussanne Hagglund, Head of Global Offer at Volvo, shared a personal note. “Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 was the quintessential family car—you’d find one in nearly every driveway. Today, the XC60 has inherited that role, not only as a modern family favourite but also as our all-time top-seller. That’s the ultimate proof of a truly successful car.”

In India, the XC60 has also made a strong impact. Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director of Volvo Car India, noted that the SUV’s popularity stems from its ability to merge performance and safety, which are core to Volvo’s identity. “For Indian families, the XC60 offers a unique combination of striking design, everyday practicality, and most importantly, the peace of mind that Volvo is known for. It’s a solid, confident package built to protect and perform,” he said.

The XC60 has also been at the forefront of safety innovation. One of its standout contributions is City Safety, the world’s first standard low-speed automatic emergency braking system, capable of preventing or reducing collisions at speeds up to 30 km/h. First introduced with the XC60 in 2008, this technology has since become a standard safety feature across the automotive industry.

Under the hood, the current-generation XC60 is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a mild-hybrid system. It delivers an impressive 250 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, while maintaining a top speed of 180 km/h.

With this landmark achievement, the XC60 not only surpasses the Volvo 240 in sales but also redefines what a modern luxury SUV can offer. Combining innovation, elegance, and uncompromising safety, the XC60 continues to drive Volvo’s legacy forward into the next generation.
