New Delhi \/ Imphal, July 26, 2025: The President\u2019s Rule in Manipur has been extended for another six months starting from August 13, 2025, as joint security forces intensify operations against insurgent groups across the state.<\/p>\n
The extension was approved by the Lok Sabha after Union Home Minister Amit Shah moved a resolution seeking Parliament\u2019s nod. The motion was passed with the House endorsing the continuation of the proclamation issued on February 13, 2025, under Article 356 of the Constitution.<\/p>\n
President\u2019s Rule was initially imposed following months of ethnic violence and a breakdown of governance. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, just before a no-confidence motion was to be tabled. Since then, the state has been under direct central administration amid persistent tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities.<\/p>\n
The Centre has said the extended period will be used to stabilise the law-and-order situation and evaluate the possibility of holding Assembly elections.<\/p>\n
Despite appeals from 21 NDA MLAs for a return to a \u201cpopular government,\u201d and growing pressure from civil society, no visible steps have been taken to restore democratic governance. The MLAs warned that \u201cstrong apprehension\u201d remains among the public about the possibility of renewed violence.<\/p>\n
Ethnic clashes that began in May 2023 have led to over 250 deaths and displaced more than 60,000 people. Key transport routes, such as National Highways 2 and 37, remain disrupted due to the unrest.<\/p>\n
In the last 24 hours, security forces arrested 10 insurgents belonging to banned outfits including KCP, PREPAK, and PLA in multiple districts, including Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Tamenglong, officials confirmed.<\/p>\n
With more than 6,000 police weapons looted since the outbreak of violence, the state remains on high alert. Reconciliation efforts are ongoing, but peace continues to remain elusive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
