Guwahati, November 28, 2025 \u2014 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reaffirmed his government\u2019s resolve to continue major social reforms aimed at ensuring gender equality and protecting women\u2019s rights in the state.<\/p>\n
In a series of posts on X, the Chief Minister said that while a small section within Assam\u2019s Muslim community supported the practice of polygamy, the majority favoured abolishing it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile a few in Assam\u2019s Muslim community supported polygamy, the majority called for its end. Assam\u2019s land, home to Sati Sadhani, Sati Radhika, Mulagabharu & Kanaklata, shapes all minds, guiding them towards justice & virtue,\u201d<\/em> he wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Referring to recent legislative steps, Sarma highlighted the government\u2019s decisions to ban child marriage and polygamy, terming them historic milestones in the mission to protect women and promote equity in society.<\/p>\n
In another post, he stated:<\/p>\n
\u201cBan on Polygamy. Ban on Child Marriage. Next, we will move towards securing equal rights for both men and women, empowering the women of Assam in the truest sense. God willing, this journey of reform will continue with even greater resolve.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The Chief Minister\u2019s statement comes as part of wider legal and social initiatives undertaken by the Assam government to curb exploitation, safeguard minors, and promote progressive family laws.<\/p>\n
The move has sparked discussions across various religious and social groups, with many welcoming the reforms as necessary changes that uphold justice and ensure dignity for women.<\/p>\n
