Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday categorically stated that the Congress will not enter into any electoral understanding with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led by Badruddin Ajmal for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. He asserted that the AIUDF\u2019s poor performance in the last Lok Sabha polls has exposed the futility of its political strategy and dismissed any assumption that an alliance with the Congress could help it cross the electoral threshold in the coming elections.<\/p>\n
Gogoi made the announcement during an organizational meeting held in the Hajo\u2013Sualkuchi constituency as part of his pre-election outreach programme. Addressing party workers and supporters, he said the Congress is fully prepared to contest the Assembly elections on its own strength, with a renewed focus on restoring public confidence and strengthening bonds across all sections of society.<\/p>\n
Launching a sharp attack on the BJP-led state government, Gogoi accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of deceiving the people of Assam, describing him as \u201cthe most dishonest Chief Minister the state has ever seen.\u201d He alleged that the BJP government has consistently failed to live up to its promises while deepening divisions among communities.<\/p>\n
After campaigning in Nalbari, Gogoi continued his tour of the Hajo\u2013Sualkuchi constituency through bike and cycle rallies, visits to religious institutions, and direct interactions with local residents. Former APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah also joined the campaign, lending support to the party\u2019s grassroots mobilisation efforts.<\/p>\n
Raising the slogan \u201cJoin hands, build a new greater Assam,\u201d Gogoi accused the BJP of promoting religious, linguistic, and ethnic polarisation instead of focusing on development and welfare. He claimed that several key assurances made by the ruling party, including granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities, improving the conditions of Anganwadi and National Health Mission workers, and ensuring transparent governance, have remained unfulfilled.<\/p>\n
Gogoi further alleged large-scale corruption within the state leadership and claimed that senior figures in the government had amassed wealth illegally. He stated that a future Congress government would take strict action by confiscating unlawfully acquired assets and redistributing them for the benefit of the poor.<\/p>\n
Highlighting economic concerns, Gogoi said traditional industries in Assam have suffered under the BJP regime. He pointed to the decline of eri, muga, and pat silk industries in Sualkuchi, as well as setbacks faced by the tea sector and cooperative institutions. He also expressed apprehension over alleged irregularities in voter lists, questioning the inclusion of voters from outside Assam.<\/p>\n
Addressing the gathering, Bhupen Kumar Borah recalled the BJP\u2019s promises made during the 2016 Assembly elections and criticised their implementation record. He raised concerns over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), alleging that the government failed to safeguard indigenous land rights while favouring large corporate interests. Borah also referred to discontent in the Bodoland Territorial Region over the non-implementation of agreements and warned of political repercussions if justice is not ensured in the Zubeen Garg killing case.<\/p>\n
During his visit, Gogoi interacted with farmers and small vendors at the Singimari market, purchasing locally grown vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, and bitter gourd, underscoring the Congress\u2019s outreach to grassroots communities.<\/p>\n
